The Czechoslovakian Wolfdog’s name doesn’t lie – it is indeed part dog, part wolf! Created for the Czechoslovak border guard in the late 1950s, the breed’s creator, Karel Hartl, wanted to improve the stamina and strength of working dogs by crossing German shepherds with Carpathian grey wolves.

Czech Dog Breeds

The Czech Republic has given the world several interesting dog breeds including the Czech Terrier, the Czech Spotted Dog, the Bohemian Shepard or the Prague Ratter. Although the Czech breeds were created almost exclusively for practical reasons, such as hunting or guarding livestock, the breeding process often resulted in visually appealing dogs who turned out to be intelligent and loving companions. Meet the seven Czech dog breeds in our new mini-series.
